Windows Vista Refund

This fellow describes how he got a refund for Windows Vista - a whopping $200 - with the purchase of his new computer.  All he had to do was decline the Windows Vista EULA agreement when starting his computer for the first time.

Brilliant!  Now a person can go out and buy those low-end Acers you can find for $500, get $200 back and brag to all your friends that you have a fully loaded laptop for the price they paid for their ASUS EeePC or other sub-notebook!

ArchLinux and the EeePC

Although I've recently found my distro of choice on my EeePC (namely Puppy Linux), I also came across a reference to a distro called ArchLinux and it being installed on the EeePC. Here is another experience getting ArchLinux on the EeePC.

ArchLinux is touted as a simple, lightweight linux distribution.  Seeing as the EeePC is also a simple, lightweight system, it would seem to be a good match.

This fellow has a nice post on his experience with ArchLinuxin general.

EeeBuntu for the EeePC

Xubuntu has a version for the eeeXubuntu and now Ubuntu will soon be customized for the EeePC as well.

I found eeeXubuntu to be bloated so I don't have very high hopes for eeeUbuntu.  Don't get me wrong, I love Ubuntu very much, but it might be like trying to squeeze a Dodge truck engine into a Smart Car.  It's not so much a factor of can it be done than should it be done - a little overkill I'd say.

While I'd like to stay true to my Ubuntu patriotism, I'm very happy with Pupeee Linux I've got installed on my EeePC.

Pupeee - Puppy Linux on the EeePC

If you want a new, fast and easy to install distro for your EeePC, look no further than Puppy Linux.  They've developed a flavour for the EeePC that they call Pupeee

The most important features such as wireless and webcam work out of the box.

I've tried eeeXubuntu (being the Ubuntu fan I am) as well as the latest Mandriva which is reported to fully support the EeePC out of the box.  Both of these I found to be bloated and not as fast as I'd like it to be.

While I had no other issues with eeeXubuntu, Mandriva had a bug such that I had 7 extra desktops (you know, those virtual desktops that you can switch between). Regardless of what I did, I could not remove them.

I can't get over how fast Pupeee is.  Fellow blogger Ronnie Tucker has a great writeup to get you started with installing Pupeee and the "official" install how to here.

Microsofts Asus EeePC Takover

Microsoft is really making a push to get its operating system on sub-notebooks like the Asus EeePC.  I find it funny that they need to remove functionality from the OS so they can make it cheaper for people to buy.  Really what this means is they probably had to remove the bloat to make it less sluggish.

The EeePC with Linux installed is still cheaper than the Windows version.
